Food Allergy Buddy to help kids and teens self carry their Epipen Epinephrine Shots.

THE BEST FOOD ALLERGY BUDDY YOUR CHILD COULD ALWAYS HAVE BY THEIR SIDE IS THEIR EPINEPRHINE AUTO INJECTORS.

Are you the mom or dad of a kid with food allergies?
Have you started teaching your child how to self carry their epineprhines on them?

medical alert epi pen waist sling waistpalStart helping your child get used to wearing an epinephrine auto injectors carrier as soon as possible.  Teaching your child how to self carry the Epipens or Auvi-Q's on them at all times before they enter middle school will make it easier as he or she grows older.

This will ensure it becomes part of their normal daily routine when getting ready to go to school, to play dates and any activity out of their home. Most importantly, it teaches them to be prepared at all times in case of a severe allergic reaction. Epinephrine injection will help stop anaphylaxis and saves life.

How old does a kid needs to be to learn about self carrying the epi's?  As early as a year old. The minute your baby starts imitating your actions it means he or she are already noticing what you do before leaving your home. Let them see you putting on a belt, tying your shoes, and last but not least, make sure they see you putting on an epipen carrier :) It really works!

Make self carrying the epi's  a daily routine and also a household rule. Going out of the house without clothing and the epipen's or auviq's are unacceptable. Your kids will thank you for it when they get older.

Get carriers that can be worn as a clothing accessory such as the Waistpal which is soft with no buckles and can be worn as undergarment sling so it can be conceal under clothing. Designed by kid and mom to be worn 24/7.

The LegBuddy is the epi carrier to have when going out or wearing long pants.

#Epipen Carriers and waist packs kids will be willing to use.

Finding an epinephrine auto injector carrier that teens
waistpal by omaxcare epineprhinewill be willing to wear could be quite challenging to say the least. As they grow older,  fashion becomes more important, and they feel more comfortable managing their food allergies. Unfortunately,  many pre-teens and teens will find ways to make their parents believe they have the Epipens with them, but the minute they arrive at school or at a friends house wearing a fanny pack or a pouch that hooks to their waist they will take them off and find a place to hide them. They simply don't want to stand out nor have to deal with the usual questions or comments triggered by most epi carriers.

The WaistPal undergarment waist sling was designed to carry and conceal up to two epipens. It  is by far the best option for kids ages 5 and over. This waist sling has details that no adult could have thought about, all thanks to a kid that decided to help his mom design a belt, not so much because he wanted to carry the epipens on him, but because he wanted to stop his mom from  following him everywhere he went.

Designed to be worn under clothing but cool looking enough that many kids like to wear it as a clothing accessory. One of the most important features of the WaistPal  is that it can be worn as an undergarment belt and has no plastic buckles, buttons, or metal pieces that could brake and puncture a child by accident. Unfortunately, many parents believe in what sellers of running belts, or fanny packs say about their products and forget that kids will be kids and will always play rough, fall, or get pushed while playing with friends.

Why sports teams and physical education uniforms don't use plastic buckles or any kind of hooks? To eliminate the risk of accidents.  Remember, a broken buckle while playing sports could be as dangerous as carrying  a knife, even if it is made out of plastic.

WaistPal is manufactured by OmaxCare and there is no other product it its category like it.Less than two inches wide with a tight easy access pocket in the front and a second one in the back. Quality and attention to every detail

Don't let your food allergic child, pre-teen, or teen step outside your home unless they have the Epipen's or Auvi-Q's not with them, but ON them. Make it clear and remind them that carrying the epipen is a rule that can't be broken, just like going out of the house naked is unacceptable.

OmaxCare medicine carriers prominently display the universal medical alert symbol in all of their clothing accessories to ensure first response emergency personnel can quickly find your life saving medications. Athletic modern designs that make it easier to  comfortably carry and conceal up to two epinephrine auto-injectors such as Epipen, AuviQ, Allerject and insulin pens.

Allergy Safe snacks kids will eat that are safe if allergic to milk, nuts, eggs and peanut allergies.

Cooking is not something I'm  good at which makes hosting allergy friendly parties quite  challenging. Figuring out what allergy free foods and snacks kids and teens with no allergies would also eat took me quite a few years and a lot of trial and error.

I'll never forget my kids 5th birthday sleep over party.   I served only healthy and allergy friendly fruits, veggies, homemade chicken nuggets, home fried chips and a cake I baked from scratch. Thank God it was a small group  because after that, non of the kids  ever accepted an invitation to come over our home.

If you are not a great cook, don't know much or know too much about food allergies, and have to provide snacks and food for a bunch of kids and teens don't panic you can do it. Keep in mind, these might not be the healthiest choice but they won't scare your kids friends.

Foods that won't scare your allergic kid friends and are also allergy friendlyThe following is a list of easy to find supermarket products that contain no nuts, no milk, no peanuts and no eggs. Please remember that it is important to read labels every time you purchase a product because manufacturers “do” change ingredients often.

COOKIES:  Oreo Original Chocolate, Back to Nature Crispy Oatmeal, Back to Nature Chocolate and cream, and all of Enjoy Life brand products, Divvies cookies and cup cakes are delicious and you can order them online.

BAKING MIXES: Cherrybrook Kitchen cakes and cookie mixes are so easy to prepare that even a young kid could do it. The peanut, egg and milk free mixes are great. The new “Gluten Free” mixes are good but it doesn't taste like a regular cake.  The non-gluten free mixes taste much better.

CRACKERS: Ritz Original, Keebler Original Club Crackers

OUT OF A BAG
: Lays Classic Potatoes, Lays Salt and Vinegar, Garden of Eden; Red Hot Blues Spicy and all Natural Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, Tostitos Restaurant Style White Corn Chips, Stacy’s Pita chips Original, Stacy’s Pita Cinnamon Sugar Chips. Almost all brands of Cassava Chips and Plantain chips. Kape Cod Kettle Plain or Sea Salt and Vinegar Potato Chips

DRY MEATS: Most if not all brands of Beef Jerky, Turkey Jerky and Salmon Jerky

CEREALS: Kellogs brand: Rice Krispies, CornFlakes, Mini Wheats, Corn Pops and Frosted Flakes.  Cocoa Kissed Rice (sold in a bag and distributed by Isabel’s Way Cereals),

BREADS:
Arnold Select Potato Sandwich Rolls, Pillsbury Crecent Original and Crusty French Bread, Publix Supermarkets regular and potato sandwich, hamburger and hotdog breads.

OUT OF A CAN &/OR VACUM PACKED:
Top of the list Canned Sardines in olive or soy oil and Vacuum Packed Tuna. Watch out for canned tuna if you are allergic to milk since most of them have milk protein (casein) Also, the vacuum pack Spam is an easy to transport food if you are tr
aveling.

FROZEN BURGERS:
Frozen Bubba Burgers the ones that come in a black box need to be seasoned but the yellow box is already seasoned and they taste quite good.  These are good to have because pre-teens and older kids can easily cook them in an counter top electric grill.

HOT DOGS: Hebrew National, Applegate Farms (stay aways from the traditional like Spinach & Feta flavor). Many Oscar Meyer and Ballpark brands regular hot dogs.

FROZEN CHICKEN STRIPS: Tyson Fun Nuggets, Tyson Chicken Breast Tenders made with white meat chicken, Tyson Buffalo Style Hot Wings Any’tizers.

FROZEN PIZZA: The Tofurky pepperoni, Tofurky Italian Sausage and Roasted Veggie, and Tofurky vegan cheese pizzas are Fantastic! They are sold at most Whole Foods stores and some regional supermarket chains like Mylans.

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP;
PLACE A SET OF EPIPENS IN A HIGH VISIBLE TRAFFIC AREA:
Always ask the allergic person to show where their Epipen's are. Not to tell you, but show them to you.  If inside a backpack or a purse be carefull where the bag is left. If it's not a party discuss with the kids parents if it's OK to take them out and hang them next to your home or apt main entrance door.

Don't be afraid of being  an “over attentive adult” .If your child doesn't have food allergies but has a friend or friends that frequently visit your home, get a set of Epipens and place them in a high traffic area especially during parties play dates, and get together. Ask the parents of your allergic kid to provide a set that you can keep at your home. Most of them will be more than happy to do so.

Have fun!!!

If your child has penut allergy and goes to a school refuses to become peanut free.

Your child is allergic to peanuts but his school refuses to become peanut free. What can you do?

"When our child entered Kindergarten, the concept of peanut free schools didn’t exist and trying to educate his teachers about food allergens was quite a challenge to say the least. My only choice was to teach our child how to live with food allergies"

At the age of two, I started taking him to the supermarket almost daily to help him visually learn what he could and could not eat. By age four, he was reading labels and could tell if it was safe to eat the food. “Better safe than sorry” continues to be our mantra. Not eating and staying hungry until you get back home is better than eating something you aren’t sure is one hundred percent safe.
I have always given the school Epipen’s for him, and since he was four he carries another set on  him. For many years I felt like I was forcing him to carry an illegal weapon because there were no clear school policies regarding epinephrine. Today, thanks to the efforts of some amazing parents, all but five states in the US have passed the “self carry epinephrine legislation”. Unfortunately, the majority of food allergic kids are still not carrying their Epipen’s on them.
I am not a fan of peanut-free schools because it can paradoxically lead to a false sense of security, could affect how soon a kid learns how to manage their food allergies in the real world, and it will not help the millions of kids allergic to other foods.
“If you walk into a school and start asking teachers if they know what an Epipen is and how to use it, most will answer yes. If you don’t say a word and simply show them an Epipen the majority will ask; What is that? Unfortunately, many first aid trainings given to school personnel other than nurses, do not include when nor how to administer an epinephrine injection.
More efforts are needed to teach kids and school personnel about managing food allergies like adequate monitoring of meals and snacks, reading labels, clean up after food is served, creating a not sharing food policy, hand washing, and ensuring children self carry their Epipens and school personnel learns how and when they need to administer the injection.
Parents have to teach their kids how to use the Epipen and ensure that they self carry the auto injectors. Don’t let your food allergic kids step outside your home unless they have the Epipen’s; not with them, but ON them. Make it clear and remind your child that carrying the Epipen is a rule that can’t be broken, just like going out of the house naked is unacceptable. To ensure 100% compliance get an epicarrier. It needs to be discreet, cool looking, and comfortable.
For kids and teens, especially boys the most practical solution is an undergarment leg holster or waistband that they can be discreetly wear under their clothes. There are few options out there. I recommend the LegBuddy and WaistPal because I had to create them for my husband and son and they have been using them since 2006. This is not a sales pitch but as a closed friend always tells me, “You need to promote and keep blogging about the OmaxCare epipen carriers… by not doing so you could be denying others from finding a life saving solution”
